CHAPTER 18

Just onnne more second. Sarah finished typing the email she was working on, hit Send, and picked up her ringing phone, her eyes still on her monitor screen.

“Sarah Pascal.”

“Sarah, it’s Phil Roberts. I wanted to let you know that our techs were able to pull up the photos on the memory card. It has to be the one that was missing from Benjamin Brooks’ camera. All of the photos are from the craft fair. We’ve had a chance to look them over, but nothing is out of the ordinary for what we would expect to be seeing.”

“Huh. I was sure that’s what he told me, We should look at the photos. I guess I could have been mistaken. Our connection didn’t last long, so that’s possible. He may have had more to say but didn’t get the chance.”

“We’ll go through them again, but if he pays you another visit, let us know.”

“I will. By the way, did Quentin Gray’s alibi check out?” Sarah asked.

“It did. He was in the security footage with his bowling team right where he said he was, so we’re back to square one.”

“I’m not surprised. I’d never met him until the craft fair, but he didn’t strike me as the murdering kind.”

“That still leaves the question of who put the card in his box. They obviously were hoping to point the finger at him. And the other question is who took it out of the box and dropped it on the floor to make sure someone found it after Jennifer put it back.”

“We were wondering the same thing. I can’t say for sure, but I suspect it might have been Benjamin. He’s trying to help us.”

“Could you contact him to ask who did it?”

Sarah heard the hesitation in Phil’s voice, but wasn’t sure if it was because he thought he was overstepping or because he was embarrassed by the idea of a police detective asking someone to contact a ghost for information. She covered her mouth to stifle a chuckle. Should I tease him about this? She almost did, but changed her mind. Phil had a sense of humor, but this might not be the time to put it to the test.

“I’m not sure, Phil. I don’t sense his presence around me, but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible to make contact. It’s not a good time right now. I have a project that’s due today. I promise I’ll give it a try as soon as I can, though.”

“Thanks, Sarah.”

“You’re welcome, Phil.”

“And, Sarah? Thanks for not giving me a hard time about asking you to talk to Benjamin even though you wanted to.”

Her jaw dropped, but he disconnected before she had time to respond.

“What do you think about that, Max?” she asked. Max was asleep in his dog bed beside her desk but lifted his head when he heard his name. “Phil might be a psychic, too.”

Nonplussed, Max laid his head back on the cushion and went back to sleep.
